Eid'l Fitr Celebration

Yesterday, August 9, 2013, the Muslim brothers and sisters celebrates the Eid'l Fitr after a month-long sacrifice. Eid'l Fitr is also known as Eid-al-Fitr, Id-ul-Fitr, is a feast of breaking the fast. Eid is an essential religious festive for Muslims because it marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting and prayer. This religious festivity is a celebration of love, unity, sharing, hope, forgiveness and peace among each members of Muslim community.

In the days of Ramadan, it teaches the Muslim to stay away from worldly desires and to concentrate entirely to Allah and to thank Him for his blessings. It also rejuvenates their selves and to creates a close rapport and stronger bond to Allah. During this holiday, the common greetings are "Eid Mubarak (Blessed Eid)" or Eid Sa-id (Happy Eid). And also the As-Salaam-Alaikum is an Arabic word meaning "Peace unto to You" and the standard response for this is Wa-Alaikum-Salaam meaning "And unto you Peace".

Some of the Muslim people here in General Santos City gathered in MSU CETD to celebrate together the Eid'l Fitr. I was impressed and amazed how Muslim females wore their dresses and even males. When the celebration was started, I heard so many words of wisdom from the Imam and I observed that they really follow the rules and regulations. While the celebration still on-going, I grabbed the opportunities to take many pictures as a documentation. When it was already done, me together with my co-volunteers prepared ourselves for the distribution of foods. The chairperson oriented us, that during the distribution of food, we should put smile in our faces and say "As-Salaam-Alaikum". My patience was tested during the giving of foods because some of the Muslims are in hurry and don't observed proper instruction. My attention was caught when someone said "As-Salaam-Alaikum" to me and I responded him "Wa-Alaikum-Salaaam". Hearing this word from one of the Muslims people is very flattering.

As a first timer, witnessing this kind of celebration was really great. It provides me the opportunities to witness their best culture and traditions of Muslim tribe. Being a volunteer was really good because I was able to extend my hands to the Muslim people and I served them wholeheartedly. Through this celebration, I experience something new and I met new people. I'm very grateful and thankful to the Peace Partner club officers for inviting me and my JETSO club to join in the celebration of Eid'l Fitr. The spirit of volunteerism is within us and we are happy to serve our Muslim brothers and sisters especially in giving food.
